On Monday, February 4th the Somers Fire Department responded to a fully involved car fire. On arrival they found a 2004 Dodge Durango heavily involved in fire. While pulling lines to attack the fire a loud explosion occurred that was not normal for this type of fire. Shortly after extinguishing the fire it was determined that the drive shaft exploded and ripped a 1 foot diameter hole in the floor between the front and rear seats. The gas tank was plastic and melted during the incident. They believe the burning gasoline caused the drive shaft to rupture. All firefighters should be aware of this potential hazard while fighting vehicle fires. [more photos]![]() |
