Dad, you are my best friend and I know that just because your not here anymore you’re still with me and the rest of the brothers. Every time we make that stretch down a hall way and it starts gettin’ bad I know you will be there to show us to a window or when we’re searching a room we will stay in one spot a little longer to find someone. You were definitely the firefighters chief and NO ONE will you ever be able to replace you………RIP dad, my brother and mentor. 5555

Brothers of the Sub Base Fire Dept. and Windsor Locks Fire Dept. We both have suffered a great loss and there are no words to take away the pain. I worked with Chief Jeffery from the time I started at Sub Base in 1988 when he was a Captain and an aggressive one then I was able to see him rise to the rank of Chief and became our aggressive Chief. When the tones hit and we “went to work” Chief Jeffery would always be with the troops and not in his vehicle whether snow or heat he was there beside you leading. I will miss Kenny very much and was looking forward to working with him ’til his retirement, I was so glad I made the trip on Christmas day to L&M hospital to see him off in Life Star cause he would have done the same for me. Tim you should be very proud of your father he was a firefighters Chief, be strong for your mom and be the firefighter that has always been in you.

So many tears, every thing I do in the fire service I owe to Kenny. If it were not for Kenny I wouldn’t be a fireman or an EMT. Kenny was an awesome person and a hell of a friend. I cant thank him enough for taking me to the Yankee games. Everything about Kenny’s personality screamed firefighter and a fireman is the only thing I want to be. So I guess you could say I want to be like Kenny. The guidance he gave me, and the reassurance lead me through each day of my life. To Tim and Cathy, you have all my sympathy. You are both strong. I’m a very lucky person to be close to the Jeffery’s.

*God Bless Kenny*

I have known Kenny for over 33 years , we went to school together. He always talked about being the Chief of the Windsor Locks Fire Department. Many of us have dreams, Kenny lived his dreams and helped so many people while living them and will be missed by many. He should have been called Mr. Windsor Locks because there will never be anyone who has done so much for the residents of this town. My condolences to the Jeffery family, we will be there if you need us just like Kenny was there for us when we needed him. An extended condolence to the Sub base and WLFD. Kenny we will NEVER forget you but WILL MISS YOU. God bless you.

P.S. You and Moose and Casey are together again to tell your stories.

I would just like to say that at my first ever fire class at the Fire Academy, Summer Camp 1997. I was a junior member of the Wilson fire Company in Windsor. I met Chief Jeffery as he was teaching a class of correctional inmates how to fight fires. He was a very nice guy. I was one of the bigger kids in the bunch and on a lunch break he introduced me to a 6 ft 400 lb inmate named Bubba which was scary for a 17 year old kid. Especially when I found out Bubba had already been in for 20 years. From then whenever Chief Jeffery saw me he’d call me Bubba and it always drew a laugh. I met him again a few times over the years and at fire dept. carnivals, etc. He was one of the first career firefighters that I ever met and I will always remember him. I am now a firefighter with the East Hartford Fire Dept. and have been for a little over 5 years. I thank God for having met him and his comedic way that was to me a kind of welcome to a wonderful public service.

It is with great sadness that I write these comments. I learned of Kenny’s passing only yesterday. Many of the Windsor Locks Fire Department members will not remember me from the past, I was a dispatcher for Windsor Locks Communication back in the 60’s. I worked at Bradley Field Fire and later in years was on the Hayden Station Company in Windsor. Kenny was a leader, friend and great asset to the fire service in general. The Town of Windsor Locks and the fire service in general has lost a lot, we will all feel the void left by his passing.

The Chief was unassuming, unpretentious, yet unrivaled in his zest for what he loved to do! We Windsor locks residents are fortunate that Kenny and people who aspire to be like him, make this such a great Town to live in. Kenny’s passing touched so many because we all recognized that he possessed the perfect balance of hard work, humor, and charity. He truly was a gift to this community, and we can honor him by following his lead. It appears that his son, Tim, is well on his way. Tom Fahey

To the “Firefighter Chief”, fellow brother, and friend:

You have answered your last call and now you lie in eternal rest with your fellow family, friends, brothers, and sisters. Saint Peter once again opened the golden gates allowing you entry into a place unimaginable to most. Along with the reality that your physical presence has diminished forever, comes the warmth in knowing your spirit will live on in our hearts forever. Your soft whisper and warm touch will be heard and felt by all who knew you for now and for ever.

REST IN PEACE BROTHER!

As a former member of the Subase FD, I came to know Kenny in 1978. He had come to the Base after leaving Westover AFB. He was a piece of work even then. Even though he wasn’t Irish, he had the Blarney about him. It was him that got the members of the Subase FD. to take an annual trip to Holyoke, Ma. for the annual St. Patty’s day Parade. Needless to say it was the highlight of the year. When I left the Base for another fire dept in 1986, we stayed in contact. He was always asking how you are, be careful…. etc. I had a chance to see him just a few weeks before he died. I commented that Cathy would have to be put up for sainthood, after putting up with him for so long. We both laughed, wished each other Happy Holidays, and left, I said I would see him again. I am so sad at his passing. He should be walking around with his hands in his pockets like he always did, telling his outrageous jokes , and giving all the Red Sox fans the business.

Kenny, my friend, farewell, God Bless You Cathy and Timmy.

Serving under Kenny when I was a firefighter was a great honor, because he never made it feel as if I was serving under him, it felt like I served right along side him. Truly the “firefighter’s chief”, he put the bugles to the side often to play the part of leader, mentor, friend, and brother. He left footsteps in the hearts of anyone he met that will not soon fade away. Still, the only comfort I can take in this tragedy is seeing Cathy being the strong, proud woman she is; and Timmy, a spitting image of his old man in every way. Tim, I can only hope to be there for you 1/1000th as much as your father had been there for everyone. God Bless both of you, and know that Chief is going to be looking over each and every one of us. Someday when I answer the great 9 alarm in the sky, I will have no fear…. Heaven has the best Chief in command…….. See you at the big one, brother.

Kenny’s stories and jokes put a smile on everyone’s face. Every family get-together consisted of Kenny and the Walsh’s talking about the “big one.” Every parade we saw Kenny in the back of the WLFD line playing the drum. (He was always able to sneak a wave or a wink between drum beats.) We’re sure that Kenny is up there with Bill Walsh (Sr. and Jr.) talking about the “big one” and keeping an eye on us at our next big one…

As I stood in the cold rain Saturday and watched Kenny pass by on Engine #2 and Timothy and Cathy walk behind, I couldn’t believe this was really happening, then I started to reflect back on when I first met the Jeffery family. 15 years ago I was at a friends house, neighbor of the Jeffery family. There was Timothy running around with a hose on a hot summer day putting out fires and people with his hose, “my fathers a fireman, did you know that???” “I’m going to be a fireman too and help put out houses on fire”….. “Really!!! Yup”. Funny how it takes something like this to jar a memory of a kid running around on a hot summer day – to a young man, laying his father to rest in peace on a cold rainy day. Ken and I never spoke real often but when we did he would tell me ” we could use more volunteers at the fire house you know” always making that pitch to give to your community and protect it. You could see in his eyes the passion he had for this job. I believe it takes special people in this world to give their lives to serve and protect and to me that’s what Ken Jeffery was, not just a friend and neighbor, he was a protector of us all. We are safer in our community because of him and the other firemen in this town. He raised a fine family and was and will always be a great asset to our town. You will be sorely missed. Our prayers are with you and your family. Rest in peace Kenny.

Dear Uncle Kenny,

I know that you are in a good place now, but we all really miss you. It’s hard knowing that I wont be able to visit you at the fire station any more. I’m going to miss your sense of humor, and all of your jokes that you told whenever we got together. You were the one that made the boring family partied interesting. Now I guess they’ll just be boring. Your were one of the greatest fire fighters I knew. You would have been proud of the wake and funeral. It was the best retirement party you could ever have got. Everyone there left with a smile on there face because they were remembering the good times they had with you. You will always be remembered and I will never forget you.

Love your Favorite Niece,

and not because I’m your only one,

I would like to offer our compliments to the WLFD for the the beautiful way they handled the funeral for Chief Ken Jeffery. Being Ken’s first cousin my wife and I journeyed down to Windsor Locks from Nashua, NH to attend his funeral. We were very impressed with how everything was handled in such a professional and beautiful manner. Everything seemed to be done with such precision including the Mass, the funeral procession, the gravesite service and the social after at the firehouse. I just know Ken was up there saying “Way to go boys you did me proud” Congratulations to all the members of the Windsor Locks Fire Department for a job well done.

Chief you were a man that I could go to if I needed advice in the past 8 years that I knew you. Every time that I saw you, you would say “Hey pal, how’s it going” and then ask how the job is going and always bust my chops about Suffield Fire. You gave me the guidance to make it through Firefighter 1-2. Every time that horn blows you will be looking down to make sure that we get the job down right and get home safely. I will miss you Chief but you will never be forgotten. God bless you Timmy and Mrs. Jeffery.

I have only known Kenny since I joined the Windsor Locks Fire Department just over four years ago. In those four years the “Chief” always made me feel proud to be a firefighter in the town of Windsor Locks. Kenny was the Windsor Locks Fire Department and I know that physically he may be gone, but his spirit and love for the WLFD will live on in all the members of the department. The “Chief” loved his fellow brothers and sisters and you can guarantee that every time the horn blows in Windsor Locks, Car 10 will be the first one on the air watching over us and making sure we all return home safe.

I am so happy and proud that I had the opportunity to serve under him and I will carry that with me each and every day.

And as Kenny would say, “Hey pal, I love ya.”

Comments My sincere condolences to the Jeffery family and all personnel with the WLFD. Kenny has touched each and everyone us in one way or another. I’ve known him nearly all my life and have always looked to him as a role model and someone who knows the true meaning of the firefighter brotherhood. There have been numerous times that he has helped me in one way or another. While a volunteer he assisted me in finding a career job and since obtaining that goal he still found ways to help me to aspire further within my career. Only a month ago I sat in class with him for a week and had the pleasure of learning from him once again. Chief you will be missed and never forgotten. Thank you for all that you did for me and everyone else. Watch over your brothers from up above.

Comments To whom it may concern, I met Chief Jeffery in mid part of 1996 through a friend who just got on the job at the Submarine Base Fire Department. Since then I would only see and here how he was doing through friends of his who I now. Each time I heard what he was doing, I was always inspired. He gave me a moment of his time that one day and it was as if him and I were friends for years. His voice or courage and confidence and appreciation to all made you feel comfortable having conversation. I was able to see him this past summer, I attended a badge pinning to see one of my friends who just was hired receive his badge. A/C Jeffery’s as I always remembered him, was there and with his smile which comforted and gave joy to the ceremony. I would like to truly say that he was a FIREMAN’S FRIEND. I am currently a Lieutenant for the East Brooklyn Fire Department, Brooklyn, CT. We would like to all share our condolences to a great friend of the Fire Service and to someone who we will Never Forget.

Kenny was one of those guys who always made you feel good about yourself no matter what had happened to you. Ken and I were friends even though he was a Yankee fan. I never held it against him Smile and he never held against me my love for the Red Sox. He and I were going to make plans for my first visit to Yankee Stadium. He was so good to me personally that I can’t even express the loss I am feeling in words. As I am sure everyone knows he was proud of all of you and all your accomplishments, especially Tim. Comments Kenny and I first met in about 1978 working together at the Subase Fire Department, in Groton. Having known him for that long, I could go on and on with stories about our adventures together, but I will not. Even though I now live in Oregon we have stayed in touch over the years and I know how much he was looking forward to his upcoming retirement. I love him like a brother and will certainly miss hearing him say “I’m workin on it!” Fair winds and following seas my friend, you are in a better place now. We love you.

Comments We all are very sorry for the loss of such a great person to the fire service. Though some of us knew him better than others, we can all agree that he was one of the friendliest and most educated people to meet when participating at parades and carnivals or on the occasional mutual aid calls. This comes at such a difficult time of year and it will continue to be hard, but we will stand by you to help you cope with the pain. With deep sorrow, everyone from the Enfield Fire Dist.

Comments I am very disconsolate to have heard of the passing of Chief Jeffery. I have not known him as all of you have, though I do hold him in very high honor. Not just as the Chef, but as the person whom I meet and have shared a few moments talking about severing our country and laying our lives on the line to help others. Only some of us know what that truly means and others learn later.I am very pleased to have shaken his hand a few times at the fire house, and seeing his warm smile. To Tim and the family, my deepest sorrow. Demetrious Lamanis

Comments My deepest condolences to the Jeffery’s family. I spent 3 of my greatest years working under Kenny at the Submarine Base Fire Department. He was an amazing guy to work for, always there for the guys. I think Jeff Rheaume hit it right on the head, we will never be able to replace Chief Jeffery’s as a person or a boss. Everybody will miss him, but nobody will forget him.

Comments My thoughts, prayers, and deepest sympathy go out to Kenny’s family, friends and fellow firefighters at Windsor Locks and the Subase Fire Department. I have great and fond memories of Kenny with the Subase Fire Department when I served with them as Security Officer in the early nineties. Kenny’s great sense of humor and funny jokes always lifted spirits of all those around him. His outstanding leadership and camaraderie amongst his firefighters was most impressive. Kenny, in my eyes, and I am sure in the eyes of many many others, was truly an icon. We always kept in touch by phone over the years and I will now miss that greatly. I know Kenny will always remember that my Diamondbacks beat his Yankees in Game 7. Walter J. Latall Lieutenant, U. S. Navy (Retired) “The Commish”

Comments Nobody will ever be able to replace Kenny Jeffery. He was a firefighters Chief. I will always remember things he said like “don’t sweat the small stuff, and it’s all small stuff” and “a good firefighter is a well rested firefighter” (said one night before we hit the racks). I know he was a huge asset to the SBFD and just as important to the WLFD. I have talked to so many people that know him and have never heard a bad word spoken about him. Keep up the good work with the website and continue to make Kenny proud by being into the fire service and caring as much about it as he did.

Comments To the Officers and Members of the Windsor Locks Fire Department. I’m sorry for your loss. I worked with Chief Jeffery @the Submarine Base Fire Department. He was very good to me and has helped my career. We talked many hours about the Fire service and the Yankees. The brothers at the SBFD share the pain that you guys are feeling. Tim, Keep your head up high. Your dad always talked about you and was happy about the recent trip to FDNY for the agility. The SBFD will be here for you. Stephen Lougee FF SBFD
